How to apply:

Submissions for the 2007 Festival have closed. Thanks to all who submitted.

The Bay Area Playwrights Festival is open to all American playwrights writing in English, including students enrolled in a BFA or MFA playwriting program. In a strictly juried selection process 5-6 plays are chosen to appear at the festival.

Playwrights chosen for the festival are given 2 weeks of rehearsal (with a professional dramaturge, director, visual artist and actors) and 2 rehearsed readings separated by 5-6 days for rewrites during the 2-week festival in July and August at a San Francisco theater. The last two festivals were held at the Magic Theatre.

A pre-festival weekend retreat in July brings together artistic teams consisting of playwrights, directors, dramaturges, and visual artists. Brainstorming and feedback from other festival participants occur during the retreat. It is mandatory for playwrights to be in residence for the entire retreat and festival period.

Local and national producers are invited to the festival to see the staged readings and meet the playwrights.

Special attention is given to Bay Area writers and emerging writers.

Financial arrangement: Small stipend, travel, housing.

Application procedure: Please mail your play with resume and cover letter. Be sure to include your current e-mail address, as all further festival communication will be conducted electronically. Enrolled BFA and MFA students may also submit a letter of recommendation.

Application Fee: We are now charging a $20 submission fee for full-length submissions. Please submit your fee in the form of check or money order made out to PLAYWRIGHTS FOUNDATION.  Previous festival participants and honorable mentions are exempt from the submission fee.  If the submission fee poses a severe financial hardship, please call the office to discuss at 415/626-0453 x110.

Guidelines: Send one unproduced original full-length play. Only one submission per playwright, please. Plays shorter than 50 and longer than 150 pages are not considered standard full-length and will be disqualified. Play that has previously received a public reading (script in hand) is considered unproduced. Play that has previously received professional production, whether on Broadway, or in a small, off-off company is considered produced and does not qualify.

Please note: Only snail mail submissions are accepted. Electronic submissions are not allowed. Scripts will not be returned. Please do not send notification postcards, as we will alert you electronically after December 15, 2006 that we have received your submission. Please make sure all documents are securely bound.
