New Play Design Lab

Are you a theatre designer who is interested in having a real impact with your design work? Do you like new plays? If this sounds like you, then you need to join the New Play Design Lab as part of the 36th Annual Bay Area Playwrights Festival this summer.

Creating a play is a collaborative effort, and the design sensibility is present from the moment the play is read or heard aloud for the first time. Lab participants and Festival collaborators will listen to the play and be encouraged to see it through the eyes of the designer, exploring the visual and sculptural landscape from the very beginning. This will be your chance to see firsthand how the design process can connect with the new play development process. During the intense three-week period of the program, emerging and student designers will work with a fully professional staff of playwrights, directors, and actors of the 2013 Bay Area Playwrights Festival, aiding in the development of 6 new plays. You will also have opportunities to see shows, meet other master designers in the Bay Area, and work under the tutelage of Melpomene Katakalos, Professor at Lehigh University. This opportunity is open to all types of designers: scenic, costume, lighting, prop, video, and sound.

The application deadline is May 1, 2013.

Lab designers will be working at the PF Office & Studio (1616 16th Street, San Francisco) and the Thick House Theater (1695 18th St San Francisco). The program will be from July 9-28, 2013.

Letters of recommendation are available upon request. College credit is available per University or department guidelines.
