New Play Symposium Theater In One World Caucus: Making Theater That Matters.
Friday, July 30th 3pm-6pm
Erik Ehn with director Rebecca Novick, Marcus Gardley and Chinaka Hodge, convened by Roberto Varea Consider how art can respond to social change and be part of it.
The purpose of the symposium is to present the work of three gifted and celebrated playwrights who work to make theater that responds directly to social justice and healing from violence, internationally, within the historic US and in our urban centers. Come listen to them discuss and present new work--from hip hop and spoken word to abstract art. The event will conclude with a wine reception at the theater.
Questions: How are these three theater artists responding to the need to achieve social justice, authentic connection across borders, and healing from violence within the paradox of modern living practice, in which intimate details of violence (genocide, rape, house demolitions, racial profiling, gang warfare, road blocks, curfews, stoning etc..) are a click away, while the viewer remains immune to their devastating effect? How do we participate in a truly meaningful contextual dialogue, and foster authentic justice and peace as artists, and how does art participate in healing communities and remain art? How does theater impact issues of social justice, support healing, and help communities of perpetrators and victims to subsequently live side by side?
