Submit a Play
Playwrights Foundation's 2013/14 submission window is now closed. Please contact our Literary Manager Margot Manburg or our Artistic Director Amy Mueller with further inquiries. Our 2014/15 submission window will open in July, 2014.
Playwrights Foundation is dedicated to discovering and supporting local and national American playwrights across a broad spectrum of artistic and career positions. We seek playwrights whose works, from inception, speak to and from an increasingly diverse society and perspective. Playwrights Foundation sustains a commitment to the playwright. We foster a deep familiarity with the work of a large range of playwrights, and connect those writers with our advisory committee and creative partners. Special attention is given to Bay Area writers, emerging writers, and writers of color.
For further information or specific questions, please contact our literary manager Margot Manburg at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Open Submission Process
It is primarily through our open submission process that Playwrights Foundation Artistic Staff gets acquainted with the work of a wide range of contemporary writers. Playwrights Foundation's programs are open to all playwrights living in North America and writing primarily in English.
Our 2013/14 play submission window will be open from July 19th to September 15th, 2013.
Plays must be full-length, between 60-120 pages, unproduced and original. Submissions must be in PDF form. We do accept adaptations, but not translations. Only one submission is allowed per playwright. Plays that have previously received a workshop or university production are considered unproduced. At this time, we cannot accommodate musicals for the Festival, but will read and consider musicals for other programs, when funding is available.
There is a $20 submission fee. Alumni of Playwrights Foundation programs and playwrights under extreme financial hardship can request a fee waiver in advance of their submission. Email our Literary Manager for more details.
Playwrights Foundation Programs
Each submission is directly considered for the annual Bay Area Playwrights Festival, our largest and most public event. Select writers will also be considered for other PF programs by invitation. These opportunities include the Rough Readings Series, INKubator Workshops, and Producing Partnership and Commissioning programming. Bay Area playwrights are eligible for the Resident Playwrights Initiative, and will be invited to apply upon review. Read details and descriptions of PF programs.
Bay Area Playwrights Festival
Five to six plays will be chosen for the annual Bay Area Playwrights Festival. Winning playwrights are paired with an artistic team comprised of a professional dramaturg, director, and actors. They will receive two weeks of rehearsal and two rehearsed staged readings, separated by five to six days for rewrites. Local and national producers, theater artists and the general public are invited to the festival to see the staged readings, participate in special events and meet the playwrights.
Dates: Bay Area Playwrights Festival activities will occur July 18-27, 2014 at our home theater, The Thick House, in San Francisco.
Retreat: A pre-festival weekend retreat prior to rehearsal brings together artistic teams and playwrights to share work, thoughts and feedback with other festival participants. It is mandatory for playwrights to be in residence for the entire retreat and festival period, approximately July 10-28, 2014.
Financial arrangement: Stipend, travel, housing.
Award notification: Playwrights invited to programs other than the annual Bay Area Playwrights Festival will be contacted on a rolling basis. The playwrights selected for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival will be notified by April 15, 2014.
